This Year’s April Fool’s Gags, From LOL to Nope

April Fool’s Day falls on a weekend this year, so you’re safe from any pranks that might be perpetrated in the workplace, such as the traditional whoopie cushion on a chair, office supplies in jello and boxes coming to life in the stockroom.

But it hasn’t stopped a number of brands from getting ahead of the holiday — although we use «holiday» very loosely — and putting a prank out to the world.

From a purely practical perspective, working for a news organization, sussing out the truth is of utmost importance. So all of us here at Entrepreneur tend to be a little wary of press releases about new features or initiatives that land in our inboxes around the end of March and are just this side of outlandish.

We understand wanting to appear like you appreciate whimsy, but we have to wonder if it’s the best use of time and resources to make something that isn’t real. There could be a positive outcome, but there is always a danger of annoying your customers and the media, having it fall flat and or just being quickly forgotten.

And if everyone is participating, how do you make your prank stand out from the crowd? A lot of companies seemed to run into that problem this year. So to that end, here are some of the 2017 April Fool’s Day offerings that either impressed or confounded us.

Honda

The car manufacturer put out a commercial advertising its new horn technology: buttons with emoji faces that have corresponding horn sounds. The horn is supposed to let drivers express how they are feeling, like if they want to say hello to a neighbor or commiserate with the person stuck in traffic with them. We have to say, the ad is actually pretty charming. We give it an ?

Coffeemate

The coffee creamer maker put out a tweet that coffee flavored Coffeemate is coming soon. If you look at the @ replies, some people have been fooled by the company’s photoshop job, but we’d characterize the execution of this joke as weak tea. (Sorry, had to).

SodaStream

SodaStream pulled in a big name with Paris Hilton. The fake commercial is for NanoDrop, a supposedly super hydrating drop of water made to cut down on plastic waste. Hilton has a surprisingly proficient deadpan delivery and is a good sport. And we all just want to save the turtles, don’t we?

Burger King

In Japan, the fast food giant released burger scented perfume, and in the U.S., the company made an ad for Whopper flavored toothpaste. Honestly, we enjoy hamburgers, but that’s a bridge too far. It’s just gross. And the ad is a little creepy.

Although, we are sensing a trend here: Honda, SodaStream and Burger King all went for the mad science aesthetic in their videos. Which is to say, if everyone is going to participate, eventually the pranks begin to run together.

Duolingo

Duolingo and Honda seemed to be on the same page. The language learning platform put together a course for translating emoji, promising users that they can “learn emoji in just five minutes a day. For free.” Well played, Duolingo.

Lyft

The ride-hailing service put out a 60-second clip advertising — we think? — a fake device that let’s you request a car by just using your thumb. We’re not really sure what we just watched here. We can appreciate the Tron-inspired aesthetic, but honestly, we’re just pretty confused by this one.

KFC

In Canada, the fast food chain had better luck than Lyft with the futuristic tech commercial vibe. It put out an ad for a voice-activated smart device shaped like, you guessed it, a bucket. Points for simplicity and staying on brand.

Ikea

An Ikea in Singapore joked that it would be swapping out the toys in its children’s play center in favor of an array of tablets. Cue the concerned parents talking about the dangers of too much screen time. The joke was pretty well thought out — the directions to kids to not run with the tablets was a nice touch.

FreshDirect

The grocery delivery service advertised pitless avocados. The commercial perfectly satirizes the comically complicated kitchen activities at the beginning of infomercials, complete with the black and white filter and over-the-top frustration.

Snickers

Nope, sorry, none of that. Better luck next year, champ.

Colorado Considers End Run if Feds Crack Down on Recreational Marijuana

The Trump Administration has said it will view medical marijuana leniently but is considered renewed federal enforcement to shut down recreational marijuana sales legal in eight states and the District of Columbia. Lawmakers in Colorado have proposed a simple solution.

Senate Bill 192 would allow Colorado recreational marijuana producers to reclassify as medical marijuana businesses if the Trump Administration decides to enforce federal law that still places marijuana on the list of illegal drugs.

“The bill allows the state licensing authority to authorize single-instance transfers of retail marijuana or retail marijuana products from a retail marijuana licensee to a medical marijuana licensee based on a business need due to a change in local, state, or federal law or enforcement policy,” according to a summation of the bill by the Colorado General Assembly.

The Associated Press called the bill “the boldest attempt yet by a U.S. marijuana state to avoid federal intervention in its weed market.”

Sacrificing millions.

Sen. Tim Neville, who represents a suburban area outside Denver, introduced the bill in the wake of repeated, if vague, threats from Trump Administration officials to crack down on the legal marijuana industry. In most cases, the comments seemed to have targeted recreational marijuana sales.

Recreational marijuana sales have been legalized in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The Colorado bill essentially offers some protection for recreational marijuana businesses in the Rocky Mountain State. Should federal authorities attempt to seize recreational cannabis product or stop production, switching to a medical marijuana license would prevent the businesses for being stuck with product they cannot sell.

It also would potentially cost the state hundreds of millions in tax revenue. Colorado places a 17.9 percent tax on recreational marijuana, far more than the 2.9 percent charged on medical marijuana. Tax money from marijuana funds schools, police training and public campaigns to educate people about marijuana use, among other areas.

Still, Neville told the Associated Press that the move would at least protect entrepreneurs in Colorado. “If there is a change in federal law, then I think all of our businesses want to stay in business somehow. They’ve made major investments,» he said.

A muddled picture.

It remains unclear what, if anything, the Trump Administration plans to do that could affect the legal marijuana industry. So far, the rhetoric has been high on cryptic warnings but low on actual policy specifics.

Trump spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters to expect “greater enforcement” of federal law in regard to marijuana, but has seemed to target recreational, rather than medical, marijuana.

However, in a speech this month in Virginia, new Attorney General Jeff Sessions again talked about his opposition to marijuana, this time including medical marijuana. He said the value of medical marijuana has been “hyped, maybe too much” and scoffed at the notion that marijuana could help with widespread opioid addiction by being used for pain management.

“How stupid is that? Give me a break,” Sessions said.

Watch This Guy Try, Fail and Eventually Succeed to Build His Own Functioning Iron Man Suit

There is the temptation to write this off as a «look at this crazy person do something crazy» video, but honestly, this is one of the most inspirational things we’ve seen. UK inventor Richard Browning’s documentation of his attempts (failures and successes included) to fly like Iron Man are truly something to behold. Browning seems to have just the right mix of smarts and persistence (with a little dash of nuttiness) to pull off such a mind-boggling feat.

“I can just strap this thing on and go flying at a moment’s notice,” he told TechCrunch. “It’s less dangerous than riding a sports bike through the countryside.”

We’re not safety experts, but that statement seems like it might not be 100% true. To his credit, he does seem to go unscathed throughout the course of this video.

Keep on dreaming big, Mr. Browning. And let’s hope there aren’t many inventor-entrepreneurs out there working on a homemade Whiplash weapon to do battle with you.

In Separatist-Backed Eastern Ukraine, Entrepreneurs Are Turning Abandoned McDonald’s Into ‘DonMak’

When the McDonald’s in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk shuttered due to war and Western sanctions, some local entrepreneurs opened a nearly-identical restaurant that they call «DonMak.»

The fast food joint, which we first spotted over at Vice, serves burgers, fries and meals that come with a toy for children — all sheathed in DonMak packaging, which looks suspiciously like McDonald’s.

The iconic yellow arches still grace the front of the remodeled DonMak building:

A post shared by ??????? ???????? (@ssf3783) on Oct 14, 2016 at 11:16pm PDT

The two original McDonald’s in Donetsk closed their doors in 2014, after fighting among pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces for control of the territory intensified.

But while the city remains under siege, DonMak’s founders quickly seized on the opportunity to fill local cravings for American fast food:

People packed DonMak for the July 2016 opening:

Last year, McDonald’s lawyers said that they were looking into «Mc,» a copycat burger restaurant that opened in Luhansk, another separatist-controlled city in Ukraine, after the American chain closed there in 2014. It’s likely a matter of time before DonMak faces the same legal scrutiny.
